FINDING THE BEST GYM FOR YOU
- Time - Visit the gym during the times you plan on using it. You need to see how crowded it is. Is there a wait for the more popular machines. Ask what hours the gym is open for both weekdays and weekends. Is the location convenient for you to get to.
- Cost and Contracts - There are plenty of cost structures available. Sometimes you can get away with not signing a contract, but you will probably have to pay a higher monthly rate. Are there any additional charges associated with your membership. What is the policy for unexpected illness, injury or change in work commitment.
- Equipment and Programs - What programs do they offer and what are the charges associated with them. Different gyms are tailored to different people. Some keep beginners in mind while others are for serious body builders. Make sure they have the machines that you would want to use. And the gym is compatible with your level of fitness.
- Facilities - What is the atmosphere like. Do you feel comfortable. Is it clean, well lit and air conditioned. Are the machines in good repair. Be sure to take a tour. Check out the showers and change area. Is there a separate area for the machines, free weights, and warm up/cool down stretches.
- Staff - Is the staff friendly and knowledgeable. How available are they during your workout. Do they offer ongoing support or are you on your own after the initial orientation. You can expect personal training to cost extra but is ongoing advice free. Observe their interaction with members. A good sign of ongoing support – staff who seem to know everybody’s name and greet them when they walk in.
- Free Trial - Do they offer a free week pass. Be wary of gyms that don’t allow you to try the facilities before you sign up. Talk to other members while you are there.
